If God is good, why is there so much suffering?

The Bible does not hide suffering. It says it came through sin, that God entered it in Jesus, and that he will end it. Buddhism says suffering is just how existence is, with no one to answer for it.

The Buddha's first truth is that existence is suffering. The Bible agrees the world is groaning, but it says the world was made good and was broken, and that its Maker has not walked away. He came into it, suffered on a cross, and rose to begin making all things new.

That does not answer every why. It gives something better than an explanation: a God who is with us in suffering and a promise that it will end.

31God saw everything that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. There was evening and there was morning, a sixth day.

Genesis 1:31 (WEB) · context

20For the creation was subjected to vanity, not of its own will, but because of him who subjected it, in hope 21that the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of decay into the liberty of the glory of the children of God. 22For we know that the whole creation groans and travails in pain together until now. 23Not only so, but ourselves also, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for adoption, the redemption of our body.

Romans 8:20-23 (WEB) · context

3He was despised and rejected by men, a man of suffering and acquainted with disease. He was despised as one from whom men hide their face; and we didn’t respect him. 4Surely he has borne our sickness and carried our suffering; yet we considered him plagued, struck by God, and afflicted. 5But he was pierced for our transgressions. He was crushed for our iniquities. The punishment that brought our peace was on him; and by his wounds we are healed.

Isaiah 53:3-5 (WEB) · context

4He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; neither will there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain any more. The first things have passed away.”

Reason 6: Karma blames the sick and the poor. Jesus did not.

Welcome to BuddhistTok

BuddhistTok tests what Buddhism teaches (karma, rebirth, no-self, nirvana, no Creator) against the Bible, quoting the Buddhist texts word for word, and shows why Jesus is the way, the truth and the life.

Read the ten places Buddhism goes wrong, learn what each tradition believes, swipe the cards, or ask a question. We critique ideas, never people.
